I then had to pull an emergency lane switch to get into the Exact Change lane because I don't have Eazypass in this car. When i got the the lane, I wound down my window, slowed down and tossed a quarter into the toll so that I could continue my journey. This was the beginning of he brief entertainment.
After a few seconds, I realized that the digital screen in front of me did not tell me to go. I was already pulling forward -- this is what you naturally do once you get used to trusting the parkway technology. Apparently, I had my hopes up a bit too high. My patience was being tested a this point. I wasn't permitted to go just yet.
My window was already several feet past the toll bucket at the time and my payment didn't register. I didn't want to anger the driver behind me, so I quickly grabbed another quarter from my pocket and tossed a long shot from my slightly distant window towards the bucket at the toll booth. I actually put a bit of arc into this quarter with no hesitation. Surprisingly, the quarter went in from that far away.
The driver behind me was a New Jersey driver and I was already taking too long. To my surprise, he smiled, yelled out, "nice shot!" and gave me a thumb's up. I replied with a thumb's up of my own and pulled away from the booth. What a classic New Jersey moment! |
